Air quality is an important factor for many people, especially those affected by asthma or other respiratory illnesses. An easy solution is to maintain your system by changing the air filter often, usually a minimum of 4 times a year. Another option is to install a heat recovery ventilator which provides full ventilation, changing the air in your home completely three times every 24 hours.

I've had my HVAC equipment for over 10 year, how often do I need to replace my furnace/air conditioning unit?

Most residential units need to be replaced at least every 20 years. However, this is only if they have been maintained properly. Your system, however, if it is over 10 years old will likely be a low-efficiency system, which is probably increasing your energy use and your utility bills. A certified technician or sales representative can visit your home or workplace, upon request, and assist you in assessing your system and offer potential services or equipment solutions to make sure your heating/air conditioning is working efficiently and economically.

How do I change my filter?

Generally changing a filter in a homes HVAC system is easy to do, however some older or more complex systems might require the assistance of a certified technician to perform this task. In most cases the filter will slide right out between the air intake duct and the furnace, but when replacing the air filter make sure to use the same filter size and type as the previous one.

I suspect there is a gas leak or I smell a gas/burning smell in my home or business, what should I do?

In this situation call your gas company immediately. For the Greater Toronto Area the emergency line for Enbridge Gas Distribution is 1-866-SMEL-GAS or 1-866-763-5427.

What should I keep my thermostat temperature at to save on energy costs?

The ideal temperature will generally vary from home to home but it is wise to keep this figure between 23-25°C in the summer giving better humidity control and noticeable energy savings. During the winter months 19-21°C temperature settings are more favorable. During winter time your humidity settings 35% to 40% are favorable.

The savings and efficiency do vary though depending on variables like the size of your residence/business, how insulated the location
is and the number of occupants in the home/office.
